Gina-Qian Cheung (M.S, M.A, PMP) is the Chief Technology Officer at the Survey Research Center (SRC), University of Michigan. Her responsibility is to oversee the technical operations of Survey Research Operations (SRO) and to ensure it aligns with the business objectives of SRC. Ms. Cheung has planned, coordinated, directed, and designed the operational activities of the Technical Service Group within SRO. She also provided direction and support for IT solutions that enhanced mission-critical business operations. Her 30+ years of IT experience included positions as Director of Technical Service Group, Manager of Application Programming, Data Modeler, Analyst, Technical Architect/Lead, and senior programmer. These positions enabled Ms. Cheung to gain IT skills in defining, designing, building, testing, and implementing new software products and highly sophisticated software systems. She is responsible for ensuring technical and business requirements are captured and validated, providing task definitions, time estimates, resource requirements, and budget tracking. She gives solutions effectively and quickly to support multiple projects in a complex technical environment.

Social Survey Research has changed dramatically in the last 30 years, and the technology used for social survey research has revamped for the new requirements and advanced research.  In this talk, I will use my own experience to have a quick review of technologies used in social survey research in the last 30 years, discuss some of today’s significant challenges, and what are the trends for the social survey research. I will focus on three major components of social survey operation: Survey management, Sample management, and Data management.
